Inside the edit

First, find the story.

On Border Security, I work first as a story editor and then as an editor. I look through the material for the central question, the turns that change our understanding, and the ending that gives the story its shape. Then I build that arc on the timeline.

There are many restrictions on what we can show and what we can say. That makes the work more demanding: every story still needs a beginning, middle and end, but the pieces available to tell it are limited. Finding a clear, engaging way through those limits is the puzzle I enjoy.

The scale of the work

A new story every time.

A season can contain hundreds of individual stories across 20 episodes. Each brings different footage, people and challenges. The work is to make every one of them understandable and compelling, without losing sight of what the material actually supports.
